17 January was the deadline to apply for courses and programmes for autumn semester 2011 at Swedish universities and university colleges via the central application portal studera.nu. Data from VHS (Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services) shows that the number of applicants to master´s programmes decreased by 73% compared with applications for autumn 2010. The number of applicants to international courses decreased by 86% compared to 2010.
The admissions round to international courses and master's programmes, which started on 1 December, 2010, was the first with application and tuition fees for applicants who are not citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland.
A decrease in the number of applications is a common pattern after the introduction of fees, as lessons from Denmark and the Netherlands show.
- The number of international applicants has gone down, which was expected since this is the first year that Sweden has fees, Tuula Kuosmanen, Director of Admissions at VHS, points out.
25,094 applications were submitted for master's programmes of autumn semester 2011, compared to 91,788 for autumn 2010. The number of applications to international courses at Swedish universities and university colleges for autumn 2011 was 5772, compared to 40,429 for autumn 2010.
- As of right now, our data shows that approximately 23,000 applicants are required to pay fees, and about 6000 are deemed to be exempt from fees. However, applicants have until 28 January to pay their application fee. First after that date will we know how many have submitted a complete application, explains Ms. Kuosmanen.
